Data Privacy Day: safeguarding trust in a digital world

23 January 2025

38-Data-Privacy-Day

Every year, on the 28th of January, we celebrate Data Privacy Day. At JUMO, protecting personal information in an increasingly digital world is embedded into our policies and products. As Compliance Associate and Data Protection Officer for JUMO, Marette Mouton is dedicated to ensuring that we comply with regulations and maintain the highest security standards.

In an era where data fuels financial inclusion and innovation, safeguarding privacy is not just a regulatory requirement, it’s an ethical imperative. At JUMO, trust is the foundation of everything we do. As a banking infrastructure provider enabling financial ecosystems across Africa, we empower mobile network operators and banks to deliver next-generation credit and savings products to millions of entrepreneurs. However, this progress only holds value if we handle data responsibly.

Privacy in the Age of AI and Fintech

The fintech industry thrives on data, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) analysing spending behaviours, credit histories, and financial patterns to create tailored products. This unlocks unprecedented financial opportunities but also presents challenges such as data security risks and ethical AI governance. At JUMO, we believe in responsibly serving the unbanked, where AI drives innovation while ensuring security, fairness, and privacy in every interaction.

Privacy in the Age of AI and Fintech

When collecting data from a customer it is very important that we communicate to them and they understand what happens to their data. It is important to remember that even though data is shared with JUMO, we do not become the owner of it, only the controller or processor. Customers have a right to know the following:

  • The data being collected – Transparency begins with clear communication on what information is gathered.
  • How it is being used – Customers should understand whether their data informs financial decisions, product customisation, or security improvements.
  • Who has access to it – Customers should be informed of who their data may be shared with and we must ensure that personal data is protected from unauthorised use and shared responsibly.
  • The protections that are in place – Encryption, compliance with global standards, and responsible AI practices safeguard user data.

We ensure that our partners, customers and employees are made aware of our data protection principles and processes by having robust policies, training and communication.  Our automated algorithms not only expand financial access but also protect customers from overindebtedness, reinforcing responsible lending practices.

Data protection in Africa: progress and challenges

Across Africa, 36 out of 55 countries (65%)  have enacted data protection laws, demonstrating the continent’s commitment to privacy. However, many nations face challenges in enforcement due to limited resources and regulatory capacity. As JUMO integrates AI-led information and transaction management to support banks with scalable, low-cost financial solutions, we are also committed to upholding world-class governance standards. Our ethical approach to data protection ensures that financial services remain transparent, sustainable, and aligned with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Practical tips for protecting your data

While companies like JUMO play a crucial role in securing data, individuals must also take an active approach. Here are a few practical ways to enhance your data privacy:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for different accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
  • Be cautious about sharing personal information online and on social media.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions unless using a secure VPN.
  • Keep your software updated to ensure security patches are in place.
  • Regularly review privacy settings on the platforms you use.
Why data privacy matters to me

Working in risk and compliance, I thrive on solving complex issues alongside a talented team in a fast-paced, innovative industry. Having a footprint in different countries means the data privacy laws are not a ‘one size fits all’ and we have seen the data commissions becoming stricter in their enforcement of these laws. But beyond my professional responsibilities, I care about data privacy because it directly impacts people’s lives. Since our target market is mainly the unbanked, we are only too aware that interaction with us is the first formal banking/lending experience many of our customers will have. We have a great responsibility to interact with their data in a manner that is not only legislatively compliant but also adheres to international best practices. Financial inclusion should never come at the cost of privacy.

At JUMO, we are committed to using technology responsibly to ensure that financial services remain accessible and secure. We constantly review and monitor our controls and processes to see where improvements can be made. I encourage our business partners and individuals alike to reflect on their data practices on this Data Privacy Day. Let’s work together to create a world where privacy and innovation go hand in hand.
